《 上課要求 》
Class will be a mix of lecture, in-class writing time, discussion, and workshop. Students are expected to participate in all writing exercises as well as participate in discussions. Discussions will revolve around stories read for class and the work you have written.
Towards the end of the semester, students will be introduced to the “workshop” method and students will be providing feedback for each others’ work, which includes prepared written comments and in-class discussion.

《 報告要求 》
There will be selected readings (short stories and excerpts) to read for each week, as well as short writing prompts.

《 課程評分方式 》
25% Class Participation / Attendance / One-on-One Meeting with Teacher 25% In-class / Take-home Writing Assignments 50% Midterm: Story Draft + Final: Revised Story
Attendance: Students are expected to attend all meetings. Up to three absences may be excused depending on the situation. (5% — but obviously if you don’t show up to class very often, you won’t be participating, so it will affect your participation grade)
Class Participation: Participation is a very important part of the class. Students will be assessed by their willingness to discuss readings, to participate in all writing exercises, the thoughtfulness and preparation of their workshop discussion, and their general enthusiasm. Workshop participation is especially important — students are expected to have come prepared with marked up comments on peer work and to discuss in class. (15%)
One-on-One: There is one required one-on-one meeting with the teacher to discuss your midterm story and other work. These will be scheduled for soon after your workshop. The meeting is designed mostly to help you with revisions on your story. This is not a time to figure out what I expect from you or give you the “right answer”, but rather for you to ask me questions about stories and how to improve your creative work. If you show up and are enthusiastic, you will get full marks. (5%)
Writing Assignments: There is no “right” way to write creatively. I want you to use your imaginations and feel free to explore different ideas. That said, I will be paying attention to whether or not you actually complete the assignments given and the effort given to them. I will also pay attention to your grammar and sentence structures. (25%)
Story Draft: The midterm project will be a short story that the student has written, incorporating the elements they have learned in class. This story will be workshopped in the second half of the term so that the student can revise it for the final. It will be either turned in electronically or enough paper copies must be made for the class. It must be turned in one week before your scheduled workshop date. If students feel they cannot complete a long first story at their level, we can discuss several shorter pieces as an alternative portfolio (at teacher’s discretion).
Final Story: A final, revised version of the midterm story (or portfolio) will be turned in directly to me. Students will be graded by the quality of the story and the quality of revisions based upon feedback given to them by their peers in the workshop process.
The midterm draft will not be graded in the traditional sense; rather the draft and the final will be considered together as revision is part of my assessment. (50%)

《 討論要求 》
Discussion will be expected for several areas of the class:
(1)Students will be expected to come prepared to discuss assigned readings (2)I encourage students to share their in-class exercises. Sharing is voluntary; however, I hope students will share several times throughout the term as this class thrives on trusting your peers with your work (3)Students are expected to be able to comment on and encourage their peers’ work. A formal workshop method will be introduced when workshops begin in the latter part of the term. All students are expected to participate.
