In the age of social media, digital creation, and widely available AI tools, we constantly use and create content—sharing images, editing videos, designing slides, writing posts, building portfolios, producing class projects, and even generating texts or images with AI. Many of these everyday activities are closely connected to intellectual property (IP), including copyright, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets. Without basic IP literacy, students may unintentionally infringe others’ rights—or fail to protect their own creative work in collaborations and future careers. This general education course introduces IP through an accessible, interdisciplinary, and real-life lens. Through case studies and scenario-based discussions, students will learn essential concepts and practical rules: What counts as fair use? What is the difference between quoting and plagiarism? Can we use photos, music, fonts, memes, or online assets in school projects? Who owns AI-generated content? How can a brand name or logo be created without infringement while building distinct identity? How do ideas become protectable outcomes? The course also covers common licensing models (e.g., Creative Commons), platform takedown mechanisms, and basic remedies—helping students develop legal literacy and media awareness for the digital era. Instead of memorizing statutes, the course focuses on decision-making frameworks and practical skills—so students can create responsibly, use materials legally, reduce risk, and strategically protect their own work and personal brand in academic projects, creative practice, entrepreneurship, and future professional life.
